Membership Categories
Since the inception of the new Accountants Act 2010, in April 2011, the Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants had a lot to do in terms of implementing some of the items on the Act, at the same time BICA was born, the new BICA qualification was also born, and then came the introduction of new categories

Membership Requirements
A person may apply to register as BICA member as either Accounting Technician or Professional Accountant. In order to be comply with the Accountant’s Act 2010, the following are the requirements to register with BICA as a member;
- Every person/entity that renders the following services shall register with BICA for compliance purposes, Audit and Assurance, Management Accounting, Public Sector Accounting, Internal Audit, Any other of accounting as the Council may determine.
- The person must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must be resident in Botswana.
- Has academic accountancy and related qualification from accredited Institutions.
- To apply for BICA Associate/Fellow category; Must be a full member of IFAC Professional Chartered Accountancy body recognized by the Institute, Must be a member in good standing.
What Are The Implications Of Non Compliance?
A person shall not hold himself or herself out as a professional accountant, or designation likely to create the impression that he or she is a professional accountant, unless he or she is registered with the Institute as a professional accountant

A person who contravenes the provisions of subsection (1) commits an offence and is liable to a fine not exceeding P500 000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years, or to both
